Trainer Q&A - Brad Widdup

How did you first get into racing?
I grew up in racing. I got exposed to racing through my father, who was a trainer in Albury. I started working on horses in my teens and have continued doing so since.
All time favourite horse outside of your own?
Better Loosen Up. This was a while back, but it was one of the first of the Aussie horses to go overseas. It won in the Japan Cup.
Biggest thrill in your career to date?
Being given the opportunity to train great horses has been an ongoing thrill
Biggest disappointment?
Plenty. Every horse that gets beaten is a disappointment. Every time a horse runs a bit below average. I’ve been lucky so far.
Biggest gripe of the industry?
I don’t have real gripes. I’ve had a great run so far in NSW. There a lot of very positive people in the industry.
If I want to improve on something, it would be to find new ways to get people employed in the industry. Find new ways to get new talent in.
Race they would love to win most and why?
Any Group 1 race will do. It doesn’t matter which, any will be great. It’s hard enough to win a Saturday race, let alone a Group 1.
What sort of innovations or improvements would you like to see in the industry?
I think we are behind Victoria in training establishments. We have some great tracks in Victoria but we don’t have a Cranbourne or Pakenham or multipurpose training centres. We’re a bit behind in that regard. I would like to see a purpose-built training facility.
Hobby/Interests outside of racing?
I don’t have real hobbies outside racing. I do enjoy watching my kids play sport.
What would you be doing if you weren’t training?
Racing is all I’ve ever done so if I weren’t training, I’d still probably be playing some role in it.
Training ambitions for the future?
I hope to keep improving each season. Always aiming higher!
